Refurbishment of Grade II Listed Gates

Bishops Close, Berkshire

“I just want to thank you and your team for your wonderful customer service, quick responses, reliability, expertise and patience during the entire process of refurbishing the gates. There were many anxious moments but your experience and calm really helped. Everybody is delighted with the gates! Please pass on our gratitude to everyone involved.” Tess Weller – Housekeeper

“A late 19th century gateway in an idosyncratic Gothic Revival idiom.” That’s how Historic England describes these picturesque gates, which when we first saw them were painted an unusual dark crimson.

The owners asked us to remove the gates and overthrow so cranes could come into their property, and, while they were removed re-decorate them.

When we inspected the gates, we found a slam plate was bent and two leaves were missing from the decorative overthrow above the gate. The owners asked us to carry out the repairs and replace the lock on the pedestrian gate as this wasn’t working. We did this, straightened the slam plate and replaced the leaves.

We also re-painted the gates in Anthracite – a dark bluey-grey the owners had chosen to complement the flint bands in the adjacent brickwork. Once this was done, we took the gates back to site, re-secured them, and painted the Victorian wrought iron lantern to match the gates – leaving the gateway looking wonderful.
